Nat King Cole en Español
Jazz saxophonist David Murray talks to Mondomix about his latest project, a heartfelt tribute to Nat King Cole’s hit Latin recordings ‘en Español’. Originally released in 1958 (Cole Español), 1959 (A Mis Amigos) and 1962 (More Cole en Español), Cole’s smoky renditions of famous Latin tunes such as ‘Quizás, Quizás, Quizás’ and ‘Tres Palabras’ went down a storm across the Americas, North and South.
This early cross-cultural repertoire is a natural for the versatile and prolific jazz great David Murray, whose previous projects include collaborations with Gwo-Ka percussion masters from Guadeloupe (Gwotet), Senegalese artists (Fo Deuk Revue) and the gospel-inspired Speaking In Tongues. The new album, David Murray Cuban Ensemble plays Nat King Cole en Español, features a stellar cast of Cuban players, tango vocalist Melingo plus the strings of the The Sinfonieta of Sines.
